70 Years Hunting, Fishing, & Trapping , , , ,

Book 2

Living on a small farm in the 40s, with no brothers and the nearest schoolmate over a mile away, native and the outdoors became my outlet for enjoyment. It was during the war years, with little income, that hunting and trapping became my passion. Trapping for income and hunting for table fare. My first mink earned me six dollars, at the age of nine. That was a man’s daily income at that time. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to earn some money. When I was 10, two farm cats died during trapping season. I got 20 cents for the black cat and 10 cents for the calico. I had many extremely close encounters with skunks. Read of being sprayed in the eye and handling a rabid skunk. When I shot my first deer, I didn’t know you needed a knife and rope. I had a close call on Mille Lacs Lake in a severe storm, in a 16-foot boat and a 5 ½ HP motor. You will also find humor, placing a live skunk in a duck hunter’s car and taking a “strange” wild duck into high school choice practice. Education for the young and bringing back memories for the older.

  • Those last three years of Fitzgerald’s life, often obscured by the legend of his earlier Jazz Age glamour, are the focus of Stewart O’Nan’s gorgeously and gracefully written novel.
